Old World Maps, Paris 1739 Map
Paris 1739 Map
98.75"W x 1.5"D x 78"H. An extraordinary feat of Cartography Published by Etienne Turgot in 1739, our Paris map is one of the most decorative and celebrated maps ever made. Every street and building of the pre-Hausmann era is shown. Not a window, chimney-piece or turret has been omitted. Today's suburbs were yesterday's orchards. Windmills dotted the landscape. Its creation was a Herculean project that took over five years to complete. Turgot's Plan de Paris is a remarkable technical achievement, a flight of the imagination created many years before the first manned balloon flight and the invention of photography. World Map 1660
78.75"W x 1.5"D x 56.75"H. World maps published before 1650 are becoming familiar to contemporary viewers. Uncharted areas were left as blank spots that were increasingly filled by later versions. The first to unveil this new mapping of the world in its full extent, including the newly discovered coastal areas of Australia (New Holland), was Joan Blaeu, the famous Amsterdam publisher of maps and atlases. Blaeu produced a gigantic world map in 1648. In many ways this map is a close copy of that original world map that Blaeu published. Two giclee printed fabric scrolls. French finished cherry wood slats, top with hardware. UV resistant fabric won't fade.

Amsterdam 1737 Map
39.5"W x 1.5"D x 38.25"H. Amsterdam was the world's commercial and banking center in the 17th C. The city expanded dramatically and the mansions lining the characteristic canals were filled with curiosities, furniture, paintings and wall maps. Decorative wall maps of the period can be seen in many works of art dating back to Holland's Golden Age, most notably in paintings by Vermeer. Bird's-eye view maps were in special demand. Every building, every house could be identified, which added greatly to the map's appeal. Since the port of Amsterdam was its heart, the perspective is taken facing the waterfront from the northeast, whereas traditionally bird's-eye maps are pictured from the south. Today the half-moon shape layout is the old city center. One giclee printed fabric scroll. French finished cherry wood slats, top with hardware. UV resistant fabric won't fade.

North America 1755 Map
98.75"W x 1.5"D x 56"H. Originally published in eight sections and called the Mitchell Map, this interesting early map of the American colonies is recognized by cognoscenti as the most important map of America ever published. At the time boundaries were in hot dispute between England and France resulting in two versions of the map, one French, one English, with some essential differences. But the buffalo herds, Native American tribes and other highly interesting details were the same in both. Originals of this map are very rare and sell in excess of $30,000. Travel back to a time when North America was gradually becoming colonized. Two giclee printed fabric scrolls. French finished cherry wood slats, top with hardware. UV resistant fabric won't fade.

Plancius Planisphere 1604
53"W x 0.75"D x 28.5"H. Renaissance culture was highly appreciative of the concept of the universal man. Studying and mastering multiple disciplines was admired. Petrus Plancius was such a man. He was both a practicing theologian and a skilled cartographer. He became a minister in Amsterdam in 1585 and also became famous as an astronomer. Plancius made his famous large size wall map of the known world in 1592. An incredible effort and one of the most decorative and detailed maps ever made. Updated with the latest discoveries. Interestingly, this map shows empty cartouches, as Plancius was probably still trying to get a royal sponsorship for his work when this print was made. One giclee printed fabric scroll. French finished cherry wood slats, top with hardware. UV resistant fabric won't fade.
